We like to bet on an array of sports, and one that we have been getting a lot of kicks out of recently is hockey. This is a great game and one that has always been close to our hearts, as is the case for many Canadians. As all gamblers will tell you, any sport is a great deal more interesting when you have a bet on.

In this article we’ll try and impart some of our hockey gambling knowledge, with a guide on the best markets to bet on, along with resources to keep you up to date with the latest happenings in the hockey world.

The Guide

How you bet depends on how much you know about the game and any individual teams. You should never bet for the sake of it, so if you only have an idea of how one result will turn out on any given week, then only bet on that one game. You should also try to avoid the pitfalls that many gamblers find themselves falling into. These include gambling on games just because they are on TV, and choosing those games over preferred games just because they are not on TV. If you find yourself in such a situation then simply bet on the game you would prefer to bet on, and then just watch the one on TV for fun — or stake very little on it.

We always like to keep it simple when it comes to betting, and we suggest that you do the same. You can win a lot of money by guessing the correct scores, the first goal-scorers, etc., but you stand a much better chance of winning the same amount simply by choosing a few winners and putting them in an accumulator.

Accumulators are actually our preferred way to bet in any sport, as it allows experts in those sports to increase their odds and get a huge return from a very small bet. To do this, simply pick your selections on any given game week, and then choose your winners via the “money line” on the bets. You should try to choose as many as you are comfortable with first, even if it means an 11 or 12-fold accumulator, but limit yourself to a very small stake here, as even $1 will likely net you thousands. Once you have that accumulator, then go through your selections again, removing those that you are not 100% sure about.

Once you do that then you will likely have about 6 to 8 picks. Stick a little more money on those than you did with the first bet, and then repeat the process again. Even if there is a tiny bit of doubt over one of the teams then remove them. You want to be left with your best 3 or 4 picks, the ones you’re 100% sure about. Nothing is a certainty, but huge shocks are rare in most sports, and they can’t be played for, but you can play for the obvious bets.

Once you have your 3 or 4 bets, then you’ll want to place your biggest bet yet. How much you place here is up to you and will depend on your expendable income, but typically it should be about 10 times as much as your first bet, and 5 times as much as your second. Try to avoid single bets, as you need to bet a huge amount to get any sort of decent return, and you will be torn apart inside if they lose. However, with these bets, even if they lose then it’s unlikely to effect you much, whereas a win will be a huge boost to your bankroll.

The Resources

Apart from a good sports book to remain loyal to, you should keep a few sites in your bookmarks, ones that can keep you updated on the latest injuries, suspensions, etc., which will effect who you bet on and how much you bet.

A site that should be in every gambler’s arsenal, is The Bleacher Report. This sports news site has a ton of information about every popular sport, including hockey. Here you can catch all of the latest news about your favorite teams and leagues across the continent.

Another great resource is Twitter. If you follow your favorite teams, along with sites like the one mentioned above, and TV sport networks, then you are sure to get the latest news as soon as it breaks. If anyone is injured, then you’ll hear about it at the same time as the betting markets do. You can never stay ahead of the sports books, but as a gambler you have to make it your goal to make sure the playing field is level.
