Snooker is often seen as the “posh” version of pool. It is also a much harder game to play and one that will take you a lot longer to master. The game of snooker has been around for a long time, in fact in one form or another it has existed for hundreds of years. In Canada, snooker is not one of the most popular sports, but as we Canadians expand our sporting knowledge and embrace more international sports, this is one of the ones that is attracting the most new fans.

The majority of snooker players are from the United Kingdom, but there are also many players from China, Thailand and other Asian countries, whilst Australia also produce many stars of the game. Nicknamed Big Bill, one of the most famous Canadian snooker players was William Werbeniuk, who retired in 1990 and whose career best world ranking position was 8th. Another Canadian player, Kirk Stevens, is perhaps better known. Not only did he achieve a ranking of 4th, but he once hit a 147 break against Jimmy White during a televised match.

Outright

An outright bet is one that you make at the beginning of the tournament, with your money being placed on who will win that tournament. You can also place these bets later on, but for each round that passes the odds will change and on most occasions (unless your chosen player is playing much worse than expected) they will increase.

Ronnie O’Sullivan is currently the greatest snooker player in the game. He is not the world number one, nor has he always been, but it is generally assumed that he is the greatest player in the game and maybe the greatest player to ever play the game. Therefore, for every tournament that he plays, he will be the favourite, the shortest price. He is also the player that attracts the most fans, which is why tournament holders go out of their way to get him to play at their tournament, and if a tournament is being televised on a major scale, then you can safely assume that he will be in it.

The odds on Ronnie O’Sullivan at the beginning of a tournament will typically pay around $20 for a $10 bet, plus your money back. The second favourite can be any number of players, depending on who is in the tournament. At the time of writing, the the ones who attract the shortest odds, other than Ronnie O’Sullivan, include Neil Robertson, Judd Trump, Matthew Selby, Shaun Murphy and Ding Junhui. A $10 bet on these guys will typically return a profit of between $50 and $200, depending on the tournament, the player and their form.

If you want to bet on a short priced player to win it all, then the trick is to get in early on an outright bet. The single markets will not pay you much, and using Ronnie O’Sullivan as an example, he will be odds-on for every game he plays, but you can get odds of better than Evens on the outright. You can also get great odds for an outsider, and it is not unknown for these to advance to the latter stages of the tournament, at which point you can cross your fingers and hope they go all of the way, or cash-out your bet for a profit.

Single Bets

The single bets are those markets that are available for each single match of snooker. Snooker is played in frames. With one “game” constituting a frame and a score of 1. A match is a “Best-Of”, and how many frames they play depends on the tournament. This can be Best-Of 11, or first to 6; Best-Of 21, or first to 12; or Best-Of 25, or first to 13. There are also shorter games played.

You can place your money on a certain player winning the game, and if their odds are too short you can also place your money on the Handicap market, which gives them a hypothetical head-start. How much of a head-start they get depends on how short their odds are and how long the game is, but there will always be a bet that offers odds of 10/11 on the – Handicap and on the + Handicap. As an example, in a Best of 11 game between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Matthew Stevens, the market might be Ronnie O’Sullivan -2.5; Matthew Stevens, + 2.5, with the same odds for both.

In a single snooker match you can also bet on how many 147s will be scored (usually the choice between 0 or at least 1, as these are rare) how many centuries are scored and whether a particular frame will have a break higher than 50 or 100.
