The need to gamble excessively can be linked to many afflictions that stem largely from mental circumstances. While the links may be far too many to put together there are three common denominators that seem to bind them, all of which meditation aims to cut through – attachment, desire and lack of satisfaction.
Attachment
Being attached to gambling could simply mean you enjoy it a lot due to the rush you get of unexpected results from a certain casino game or sports betting. However, if enjoyed too much or to the point of being unable to refuse gambling this is a problem since you are attached and cannot let go. Attachment can come from personal preferences toward things or from feeling overpowered by them due to feeling weak and powerless over refusal to that object. If you enjoy something but can’t let it go then simply put you are attached. However, if you undertake meditation and practice a specific practice called Mindfulness that is aimed toward simply watching attachments rise and fall without getting attached to them, you are able to free yourself from the shackles that burden you, i.e. your attachment toward gambling that you cannot get rid of. Meditation calms the two main nerve systems in your body and also releases dopamine, a type of chemical that fuels that “high” drive people get from working out or doing exciting things, either positive or negative, hence reducing the need to experience that emotion through other means.
Desire
The desire aspect has many similarities to attachment but can be simplified into an ongoing urge that you cannot desire no matter if you try to replace it with another type of attachment. This is most common among alcoholics in that even if they want to alter their state of being in some way through exercise or yoga etc. they still need to resort to drinking in the end. Excessive gamblers who have problems also display similar characteristics and do not know how to curb their desire. Meditation for these types of people is very beneficial by watching the rise and falloff thoughts. Each thought is considered to be an emotion or desire that comes about through the five senses in connection with the brain, which then trigger a response or feeling in the body. To see through these desires that are constantly attacking the excessive gambler and leaving him or her to feel as if the only way they can satisfy their cravings is by fulfilling them through more gambling, watching the rise and fall of thoughts in meditation can help subside this problem. By watching the rise and fall of thoughts carefully you see how they come and go without a trace. You also can see how random they are and that there is no use in pursuing them due to their illusory, impermanent existence. Within 1-2 weeks of meditating every day, gamblers can see a huge decrease in desire to gamble excessively and many were even able to kick the habit completely.
Satisfaction
Feeling unsatisfied means you are unable to except either yourself or circumstances at a specific time and place in life. For a gambler, most likely he or she is unsatisfied with their financial position or overall status in life and feels the need to prove their worthiness. By looking for a quick fix in winning at a casino platform, gamblers are able to bump up their level of satisfaction but only to see it soon wither away before succumbing to gambling again. Engaging in meditation will help calm your parasympathetic nervous system, which releases endorphins into the body and makes you feel better and more satisfied. Also, the practice calms peoples’ minds overall and brings down that insatiable desire to engage in otherwise harmful activities such as gambling.
