Real Money Yahtzee

Originally created by the Hasbro-owned Milton Bradley, Yahtzee is a simple dice game that was included with 14 other dice games and sold for entertainment purposes. It caught on quick though and became a very popular game of chance, combining luck and strategy in a gambling game that is easy to grasp.

The Basics

Yahtzee can be played by any number of players, even just one. It is recommended for people aged 8 and above, but of course when gambling is introduced to the game, that changes significantly. These rules are leftover from Yahtzee’s time as a fun little dice game that all of the family could enjoy.

There is a high degree of luck involved with this game and it typically takes around 20 to 40 minutes to play through one session. The best way to play is with just a couple of players, and this is also one of the best ways to gamble on this game.

The Rules

The game begins with both players rolling the dice to try and get the highest score in order to go first. When it is your turn then you simply roll 5 dice. You can record the score that you get, or you can roll again, up to a total of three times. During these turns you can choose to roll one, more or all of the 5 dice. When you have rolled the maximum times then you must score the final roll — you can not choose any of the previous ones at this point — based on the category of your choice.

There are 13 different categories that you can score in, including five-of-a-kind, whereby all of the faces on the dice are the same, and full house, whereby you need three-of-a-kind and a pair (based on the faces of the dice). Your score is determined by how well your dice matches your chosen category.

Your total score is often the numerical accumulation of all of the dice faces. So, if your chosen category is three-of-a-kind and your dice show 5, 5, 5, 2 and 3, then your total score will be 20. However, some of the better categories score a set number of points. These include the Yahtzee category, which requires five dice of the same value and scores 50 points. The categories are always on display, split between the Upper Section and a Lower Section, so you can see the potential scores of these categories before you choose them.

Real Money Yahtzee

Although it may seem complicated at first, with many different scoring rules and categories, once you see the layout and once you play a few games, it’s very easy to understand. The best way to learn is therefore just to play, and you can do this for real money on BetOnline. If you’d prefer not to risk anything to begin with, you can also play for free, testing your luck risk-free before advancing to the real money games. BetOnline Yahtzee is very easy to play and is more or less self-explanatory, played with just a few clicks of a mouse.

Yahtzee is heavily reliant on luck, and you can’t account for that, but there are some strategies you can use to give you an edge. After all, like every other game out there, those who understand it the most and play it more often, tend to end up on the winning side more frequently.

The main thing to consider is which category you choose. You should always ensure the odds are in your favour, always go for the most likely outcome. If you have a 3, 4 and 5 on your first roll, then your chances are slim that you’ll hit a 6 and a 7 on your second and third rolls. If you have three 3s and one roll to go, it’s not likely that you will hit a Yahtzee and get the full 5 out of 5 with just one more roll.

Sometimes it seems counterintuitive to aim low like this, but more often than not it will put you on the winning side. After all, it’s much better to have a three-of-a-kind or four-of-a-kind than it is to have aimed for something bigger and missed. It’s also much better to dismiss a near-impossible straight early on than to chase it and realise that you have no other choice but to keep aiming for the impossible.

You should also try to complete your upper section before you aim for your lower section, this will lead you to the bigger scores in the long run. What’s more, you should never underestimate the value of the bonus in the upper section, because this can be the difference between a win and a lose.
