DFS BettingNew York is clearly one of the most important markets for daily fantasy sports operators like DraftKings and FanDuel. As these DFS betting giants (and others) await the state’s decision to approve or reject their license applications, players have been given a little time to read over the new community guidelines initiated by both sites.

DraftKings issued updates to its Terms of Use late last month with the intention of ensuring players that they’re competing in a fair environment. The publication was the result of the company hiring a team of brainiacs in January, affectionately termed the DraftKings Game Integrity and Ethics Team, to script the new guidelines.

FanDuel’s new ‘Bill of Rights‘ was announced on August 1, with similar intent, but a lot less prolix. Players can quickly view the 10 simple rules that govern the DFS betting sites guarantee of a “level playing field” for all, or spend a few hours reading the long-winded version in their ToC.

Fanfare and verbosity aside, both DraftKings and FanDuel have presented customers with pretty much the same set of guidelines. And the purpose – to appease state regulators as much as players – was equally apparent. We’ll take a quick look at some of the most important rules.

No Third-Party Scripting/Pre-Built Lineups

Both operators have initiated a ban against the use of third-party scripting, which has become a major issue for casual DFS bettors who are essentially unable to compete with experienced users who gain an unfair advantage by creating or purchasing scripts that allow them to draft automated line-ups and/or alter existing line-ups at the drop of a hat.

Separate Accounts for Player Funds

The community guidelines on DraftKings and FanDuel each explain that player funds are maintained in segregated accounts, separate from the DFS sites’ general funds for operation. The segregated accounts are used to pay players, nothing more, so bettors never have to worry that they won’t get paid if the operator goes bankrupt.

Labels for DFS Betting Pros

FanDuel made sure their new members will always be able to tell what skill level they’re competing against. The site has always offered Beginners-Only contests, but now, icons have been created to distinguish all ‘Experienced‘ and ‘Highly Experienced‘ players fro the rest. This is especially handy on small competitions and 1-on-1s.

Employees Paid To Work, Not To Play

Following an inside-information scandal that rocked the DFS betting world to its core last year, DraftKings and FanDuel no longer permit employees to bet on daily fantasy sports – not at their own sites of employment, or any competitor’s site. Family members of employees who live in the same household are also banned from participating.

New York License Pending

As these fantasy sports giants get all their ducks in a row, the ultimate goal is to be able to provide their DFS betting services to residents of the state of New York by the time the NFL regular season kicks off on September 8 with a Thursday Night FootballSuper Bowl 50 Rematch‘ between the Carolina Panthers and the champion Denver Broncos.

On August 3, NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill legalizing and regulating interactive fantasy sports contests, provided operators are licensed by the state. DraftKings and FanDuel, along with four other DFS betting sites, submitted their applications and $50k license fees immediately after the law was passed.

According to Lee Park, Director of Communications for the New York State Gaming Commission, workers are pouring over the applications “nonstop” in hopes of completing the licensing process, but he added that the timetable for the process is entirely dependent on the quality of the materials submitted.

The four other operators who turned in applications for a NY license include Draft, FantasyDraft, NextGen Fantasy Football Evolution and Yahoo!
