History of WPT Fallsview Poker Classic

When the World Poker Tour announced in December 2013 that it was returning to Canada for the first time in 5 years to host a new championship poker event at Ontario’s Fallsview Casino, it was the talk of the poker realm.

The opening event debuted in February 2014 to a 600-seat sold-out crowd, but resulted in outrage among the poker community when it was discovered that many of those entries were duplicate purchases by single individuals who were scalping the $1,100 tickets for $1,800.

As for that year’s $5k main event, it attracted 383 total entries for a $1,729,510 prize pool. Canada’s Matthew Lapossie went on to win the WPT title and $342,266.

In 2015, things went a lot more smoothly as 419 entries saw the prize pool climb to $1,910,221. American poker pro Anthony Zinno crossed the border from Rhode Island to scoop the 1st place prize of $$380,021.

The following year’s WPT Fallsview main event was even more successful, but not by much. This time, 423 entrants paid the $5k buy-in. However, tournament directors increased their cut in 2016, bringing the money pool to $1,907,544; about $3k less than the previous rendition. This time, Canadian poker pro David Ormsby took the honors, the title and the $383,407 prize.
