People’s Choice Awards
The People’s Choice Awards is an award show that is held in the United States to celebrate many different aspects of popular culture, all of which are voted for by the public. The first People’s Choice Awards ceremony was in 1975, a year in which film icons John Wayne and Barbara Streisand received recognition for their work throughout the year.
Sluggish to begin with, the People’s Choice Awards received a great dose of popularity just a couple of years later, when over 35 million viewers in the US tuned in to watch the 1977 ceremony, a year in which Star Wars won one of the most prestigious awards. The People’s Choice Awards is sponsored by Procter & Gamble and has a great number of categories, with everything from Favourite Movie and Favourite TV Show, to Favourite Actress, Favourite Song of the Year and Favourite Humanitarian. There are also many awards for individual genres, and this, along with the fact that it is one of the few major award ceremonies that gives the public a voice, is why the People’s Choice Awards is now considered a major award.
The People’s Choice Awards also spawned many other awards, including the People’s Choice Podcast Awards and the Teen Choice Awards, and although it has been involved in some controversy over the years, it is generally a very well respected award show that attracts a large audience every year.
Gambling on the People’s Choice Awards
As it seems is the case with everything else, you can gamble on the People’s Choice Awards. The fact that the winners are decided by the public makes this much more interesting, as we shall discuss later, and if you are well versed on popular culture then you can use your knowledge to make a substantial profit here.
The first thing you need to do is join a site that allows you to gamble on this particular award show. The majority of sports books offer award-show gambling, but they tend to focus on the Oscars and the Grammys. If you want more variety then you have to join the biggest site, which is BetFair. This is as big as they come and it has markets on countless award shows, TV shows and other special events. As the many bets in these markets are put forth by the many BetFair members, you also tend to get better odds. This is a betting exchange, not a sports book, and whilst the differences might confuse novice gamblers in the short-term, in the longterm the only real difference is that there is more variety and better odds.
BetFair is available here in Canada and tens of thousands of Canadians have already signed up. The online gambling laws are a little confusing in this country, but you can safely assume that BetFair, as the largest gambling community in the world, know what they’re doing. Once you have signed up and found the markets on this award show, then read on for some tips on how to get the most out of it.
Tips for Gambling on the People’s Choice Awards
There is an extra element of interest here, because unlike other major awards, such as the Academy Awards and Grammys, where the winners are decided by a room of unseen voters, the public decides the winners of the People’s Choice Awards. This means that the betting markets here are more like the betting markets on The X Factor, American Idiot, Canada’s Got Talent and The Voice, as opposed to any other award show.
As with the aforementioned shows, there is usually a big favourite, one that has impressed the judges the most and one that has impressed the public the most, but these don’t always win and on many occasions there will be a sneaky outsider that manages to claim victory.
On the TV shows mentioned above, this is often down to local support. Contestant A may be the best, but Contestant B may be from a very proud region and, as the only contestant from that region, he becomes their sweetheart and the one they vote for like crazy. As far as the People’s Choice Awards are concerned, the same thing happens, only the thing you need to watch out for is not where where they come from, but how big their following is. It’s not always about the best musician, actor or actress, but rather about how many fans they have that will do their best to ensure their idol wins. This is more common with the Kids Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Awards, especially with some of the newer categories that have been recently introduced, but it still happens on some of the People’s Choice Award categories.
Just like anything else, you need to do your research, but the differences here are where you do that research. For the Teen and Kids categories head for Twitter and FaceBook; for music popularity, the Best Video category and other such awards, go to YouTube.
